Peter Buchanan, President, Management Transitions

Peter Buchanan's driving passion is to work with people who can make a difference in our community and in our world. He has spent a great deal of his professional life working with presidents, CEOs and business owners who are committed to growth and development.

Peter is often recognized as a leader and innovator in the fields of executive coaching and management and leadership development. In his career, he has spent in excess of 20,000 hours coaching and mentoring hundreds of senior executives, business owners, CEOs and Presidents. He has literally facilitated thousands of hours of meetings and completed in excess of 500 team development sessions. He is often called upon to help business leaders deal with challenging people and interpersonal issues.

In his earlier business experiences, Peter ran a division of Extendicare Canada. Later, as an entrepreneur, he raised venture capital and established a successful business in the security industry, and owned and operated a manufacturing business. In 1984, he founded the consulting firm Management Transitions Ltd. The company specializes in management and leadership development, executive coaching, group facilitation, team development and consulting in the area of organizational culture.

As well as a thriving consulting practice, Peter is the Best Practice Chairman in Eastern Canada for TEC – The Executive Committee, the world’s oldest and largest executive forum and leadership development organization for presidents and business owners. In 1987, he launched the organization in Eastern Canada when he established the first Toronto TEC group of presidents and business owners, and he has been facilitating successful TEC groups ever since. Over the years he has received seven Chairman Excellence awards, and twice he has been named TEC  Chairman of the Year. In a similar vein, he has done extensive work with the Personal Advisory Groups of the Canadian Association of Family Enterprise (CAFÉ).

Peter believes in learning throughout one’s life. His educational distinctions include an MBA from the University of Western Ontario, and his Certified Management Consultant (CMC) designation,  which he achieved during his employment at Woods Gordon, where he contributed in marketing and general management. He has completed training as a psychotherapist and the specialization requirements for a degree in Cultural Anthropology. One of his mentors was Dr. Frederic Hudson, who is the founder of The Hudson Institute and is often acknowledged as the father of executive coaching. Peter’s teaching experience includes designing and teaching leadership in the MBA program of Royal Roads University in Victoria, British Columbia. Peter also finds great joy in coaching and mentoring MBA students when his schedule allows.

Peter lives with his wife Margaret, a psychotherapist and teacher, and his dog Bubba in a home he built on Lake Simcoe, north of Toronto. They have 5 grown children and share a passion for personal growth, scuba diving and travel.
